Valve is celebrating Half-Life 2’s 20th anniversary by giving thanks to the player base that has been enjoying (or rediscovering) the game since its release on November 16, 2004.
Half-Life 2 will be free this weekend (until November 18th at 10 a.m. Pacific), so if you’ve never played it before, now is the time to get it and keep it forever.

Half-Life 2’s 20th Anniversary Update features:
All the DLC for Half-Life 2, including Episodes One and Two, are now available in one convenient package. After you finish one expansion, you’ll be able to access the next one automatically from the main menu.
- Two episodes in one box: The original game and its expansions, Episode One and Episode Two are now part of the same package. After you finish one expansion, you’ll be able to access the next one automatically from the main menu.
- Developer Commentary: Until now, the original game lacked developer commentary tracks, although episodes have always included them. To capture new behind-the-scenes commentary for Half-Life 2, Valve reunited the crew for 3.5 hours of recording.
- Steam Workshop integration: You can now access, install, and play user-made content on Steam without ever stepping out of the game. Find it under the “Extras” menu!
- Bug fixes and a new graphics option: Valve eliminated visual pops, missing sparks, and lighting from previous releases. To improve Half-Life 2’s visual fidelity to what the original release allowed, the developer included extra settings.
