We’ve all got that clip. The one where the phone locked focus on the wall behind your kid, or the drone footage that looked crisp on the tiny controller screen and mushy on a 27-inch monitor. Re-shooting isn’t an option, and most free editors only offer a blunt “sharpen” slider that turns faces into sandpaper.

SHARPEN Video 2 is built for exactly that one job. It’s not a timeline editor — you won’t cut scenes or add titles here. You load a clip, pick a look, let the automatic analysis do its thing and render a cleaner copy. I went through every step on my own machine on 28 September 2026, so the screenshots below are from a real claim — not recycled press images.

What SHARPEN Video 2 Actually Does

The program comes from Franzis, the Munich-based publisher, and is developed by Accelerated Vision — the same team behind Franzis’ “Projects” photo range. Its pitch is simple: automatic blur correction for footage from smartphones, action cams, regular cameras and drones.

Here’s what you get in the free edition, based on the official Franzis product page and what I saw in the app:

• 12 image presets in the left-hand panel — looks such as Balanced, Brilliant, Intense and Fine details that change how punchy the final video looks.
• 21 sharpness presets for when you’d rather choose the style of sharpening yourself instead of trusting the auto mode.
• Two quality modes for blur reduction: a balanced mode that’s quick, and a slower “Pro” mode that works harder on detail.
• Haze and fog correction — handy for hazy landscape and drone shots.
• Artefact reduction to tame blocky compression noise that sharpening would otherwise exaggerate.
• Magnifying glass with split comparison, so you can drag a line across a face or text and see before vs after at pixel level.
• Trim, crop, flip and frame-rate control — set start and end points on the filmstrip so you only render the part you need.

Franzis also claims its reworked sharpening engine is up to 300% faster than before. I didn’t benchmark that against version 1, so treat it as the developer’s number, not mine.

How to Get SHARPEN Video 2 Free (Tested Step by Step)

The process has three parts: grab a serial key from Franzis, download the installer from COMPUTER BILD, then paste the key into the app. Budget about ten minutes, most of which is the download.

Step 1 — Request your serial key

1. Open the official Franzis registration page for SHARPEN Video 2.
2. Enter your email address, tick both checkboxes (data processing and marketing consent), solve the reCAPTCHA and hit Send.
3. Watch your inbox for a message from registrierung@reg.franzis.de. Mine turned up within a couple of minutes. It’s written in German, but the only thing you need is the confirmation link near the top. If nothing shows up, check Spam or the Promotions tab.
4. Click that link. It opens a Franzis customer page showing your User-ID and Registration-Key. The Registration-Key is the licence key you’ll use to activate SHARPEN Video 2 — copy it somewhere safe, even though Franzis emails it to you as well.

Step 2 — Download and install

1. Go to the COMPUTER BILD download page for SHARPEN Video 2 and press the download button. The page is in German; Chrome’s built-in translate works fine if you need it.
2. You’ll receive SHARPEN-Video-2_winde.zip (roughly 234 MB).
3. Extract the ZIP. Inside is SHARPEN Video #2 DE_EN_FR_ES_IT_JP Setup.exe (about 140 MB), two PDFs and a folder of tutorial videos (in German).
4. Run the setup, choose English and click through the wizard. There’s nothing unusual to untick.

Step 3 — Activate the full version

1. Launch SHARPEN Video 2. The Activate/deactivate licence window opens with a 30-day trial counter.
2. Type any name in the name field. I used “Techno360”, and it now appears in the program’s title bar.
3. Copy your Registration-Key, then click the green “Paste your serial number/licence key from the clipboard HERE” bar. It splits the key across the four boxes automatically — far less fiddly than typing it.
4. Click Activate, then OK on the confirmation. The “(TRIAL)” tag disappears from the title bar and you’re done.

Sharpening Your First Video

Once activated, the workflow is refreshingly short:

1. Load a clip via File > Load video, the clapperboard icon in the toolbar, or Ctrl+O.
2. Pick a look from the presets on the left. Fine details suited my talking-head footage; Balanced is the safe starting point for most clips.
3. Choose the blur-reduction mode on the right. Balanced is the quicker compromise; Pro squeezes out more detail but, according to COMPUTER BILD’s walkthrough, takes roughly three to four times longer to process.
4. Fine-tune if you want — haze removal, brightness, colour saturation and HD colour protection are all there.
5. Check with the magnifying glass. Drag the split line over eyes, hair or text. If edges start to glow or halo, back off a notch.
6. Trim using the start and end markers on the filmstrip, set the codec and quality at the bottom, then press Render video and choose where to save.

My experience: on a 4-minute 1080p/30fps recording, the Fine details preset gave noticeably crisper eyebrows, eyelashes and fabric texture without the crunchy halo you get from a basic unsharp mask. Skin stayed natural, which matters more than raw sharpness for anyone filming themselves. It won’t turn a genuinely out-of-focus shot into a 4K masterpiece — nothing will — but slightly soft footage comes back looking deliberate rather than accidental.

Free Edition vs SHARPEN Video 2 Professional

The giveaway is the standard edition. Franzis also sells a Professional version, and the gap is mostly about depth rather than core function. The figures below come from Franzis’ own product listings:

What to Know Before You Claim

• Windows only. There’s no Mac build.

• Use a real inbox. The key is only released after you click the confirmation link, so a throwaway address that blocks mail won’t work.
• No upgrade promise. The offer is for version 2. Nothing on the registration page says future major versions are included.
• Keep your key. If you reinstall Windows later, you’ll need the Registration-Key again.
