One of the most common ways to store and transfer data is using a USB flash drive. A major concern, though, is the possibility of malicious or unintentional changes to files. Here’s where Windows standalone USB disk protection program Yamira comes in.

What is Yamira?
This is a light-weight and free Windows security program that can stop unauthorized changes to files stored on USB flash devices.
It provides reversible, software-based control and employs NTFS permissions to enforce read-only access, unlike physical write-protection switches. Managing security is a breeze with its user-friendly interface, which shows all attached disks, their file systems, and protection statuses.
Users can effortlessly safeguard their USB storage devices from malicious or unintentional file modifications using its straightforward and user-friendly interface.
The software will show all the USB drives that are attached, together with important characteristics like the root directory, device name, file system type, total capacity, and protection status.
Here is how it works?
NTFS Requirement:
Formatting USB devices as NTFS is a requirement of the software. Yamira has a one-click NTFS formatting option for drives that use FAT32 or exFAT, but you should back up your data beforehand.
Enabling Protection :
With only one click, the open source tool removes write permissions from the root directory of the USB drive, making it read-only for all users. A hidden folder called “TSProtectionSystem” is also created for managing permissions.
Disabling Protection :
Choosing the disk and then clicking “Turn Off Protection” allows users to access and change the drive’s contents. Restoring write permissions allows for all users to edit, remove, or add files typically.
Limitations and Considerations
NTFS Requirement: Mandates the use of NTFS formatting, which could restrict its compatibility with some devices, especially older operating systems and platforms that aren’t Windows.
Cross-Platform Limitations: When you write-protect a USB drive on Windows, it won’t work when you access it from Linux or macOS.
