What Is Analog Projects 4, in Plain Words?
Think of it as a darkroom that lives on your PC. You open a picture, click a style on the left — say, a 1970s pocket camera or an old wet-plate portrait — and the program stacks a set of effects on top of it: grain, colour shifts, vignettes, soft focus, film borders, scratches. The result looks like it was shot on film decades ago, not on a phone last weekend.
What makes it more than an Instagram filter is that nothing is locked. Each preset is really just a recipe of individual effects. Switch to the Expert tab and you can see every ingredient, turn any of them off, tweak the strength, and even limit an effect to one part of the picture. Once you’ve built a look you love, you save it as your own preset.

How to Get Analog Projects 4 Free — Step by Step
There are three parts: get your key, download and install, then activate. Start with the key request, because you need the Registration-Key before you can unlock the installed program.
Part 1 — Request Your Serial Key
- Open the official Franzis registration page for Analog Projects 4.
- Type in your email, tick both checkboxes (data processing and the marketing consent), clear the reCAPTCHA and press Send.
- Check your inbox for a mail from registrierung@reg.franzis.de. Mine arrived within a couple of minutes. It’s in German, but you only need one thing from it: the confirmation link near the top. Click it. (No mail? Look in Spam or Promotions.)
- The link opens your Franzis customer page showing a User-ID and a Registration-Key. That key is your serial number. Franzis mails it to you too, but copy it somewhere safe anyway.
💡 Tip: The same page asks for your name, date of birth and a password. When I tested it, the Registration-Key alone was enough to activate the software — I didn’t need to fill in any of those profile fields.
Part 2 — Download and Install
- Go to the COMPUTER BILD download page and hit the download button. You’ll get ANALOG-projects-4_winde.zip. Chrome can translate the German page if you need it.
- Extract the ZIP. Inside you’ll find ANALOG #4 DE_EN Setup.exe (about 330 MB) and a Videos folder.
- Run the setup, pick English, and click through the wizard. It installs version 4.33.
Ready to activate it? You’ll need your key first.
Part 3 — Unlock the Full Version
- Launch the program. The activation window pops up and shows a 30-day trial counter.
- Type any name in the name field (I used “Techno360” — it shows up in the title bar afterwards).
- Copy your Registration-Key and click the green “Paste serial number from clipboard HERE” bar. It splits the key across the four boxes for you — much easier than typing it.
- Click Activate, then OK on the success message. Done — the title bar now reads “Registered to” your name instead of “TRIAL”.
Your First Retro Edit in Under a Minute
- Load a photo with File → Load Image (or Ctrl+Shift+O).
- Click a category at the top-left — Roll film, Vintage, Old newspaper — then pick one of the thumbnails below. The preview updates straight away.
- Not quite right? Nudge the Clarity, Dynamics or Sharpness controls on the right, or open Expert to fiddle with individual effects.
- Save with File → Save Result Image (Ctrl+S). You can choose JPEG, TIFF, PNG or PPM.
My Honest Take After Using It
I threw a busy, harshly lit evening shot from Mysuru Palace at it — crowds, stage lights, white plastic chairs, the kind of image that screams “phone camera.” With Roll film 1 it picked up a soft fade, a warmer cast and those printed frame numbers along the edge, and suddenly it looked like a print from an old family trip. It took one click.
The comparison view is the feature I kept coming back to. Dragging the split line across the magnifier tells you straight away whether a preset is helping or just adding noise. A few of the heavier looks (Old newspaper, Wet plate) are more novelty than daily use, but Roll film, Vintage and Pocket camera are the kind of thing you’ll actually reach for.
Two small gripes. The interface is dense — lots of small icons, and it takes a few minutes to find your way around. And the setup file I downloaded carries a 2022 file date, so don’t expect it to know the newest camera RAW profiles. For a free, fully unlocked film emulator, those are easy to live with.

If you’ve ever wished your phone photos had a bit of soul, grab this. Analog Projects 4 gives you a proper film-look editor with 70 ready-made styles and full control underneath, and the registration only takes a few minutes. It won’t replace Lightroom, and it isn’t meant to — it does one thing, and it does it with character.
